Christmas Tree Ornament - Secret Santa!

I’m a member of an online group of artisans, mainly from Canada and the USA but with a sprinkling of ex-pats like myself for good measure who all hooked up for a Secret Santa exchange of handmade ornaments.

For my ornament, I thought I’d have a go at replicating something I’d seen in the Bradley Museum at Christmas a few years back. The Bradley Museum house is decorated each year in the style of the first wave of 19th century settlers in Ontario. I took my inspiration from the lanterns I saw where the light shines through holes punched in decorative patterns.

I started by drawing the shape of a tree with a sharpie directly on to copper sheet.

Piercing it out was easy as copper is soft and quick to cut through.

I filed the edges with a half round large file, and then worked my way through the grades of sanding paper so the edges were nice and smooth.

Next – lots of drilling! I drilled a few extra dimples, as I’m going to be soldering on some silver baubles. These baubles will balance in the dimples rather than get’ blown away’ as I solder.

I textured the surface of the copper with a wire brush.
To make the baubles, I cut silver wire in to 14 little lengths and melt each piece using a lot of flux to form silver spheres. It’s the same technique I use when making the starfish pendant

The flux helps the silver flow. It’s hypnotizing to watch the wire melt and cling together forming a sphere shape. I have melted some things I didn’t mean to in my time, so melting silver on purpose is really satisfying!

Next I solder the baubles on to the tree. I love the way copper turns so many different shades of red and orange as it heats and cools.
A right good ‘pickling’ in mild acid removes the firestain!
The acid solution I use is very gentle. Properly diluted it can be disposed of down the sink with no harm to the environment.
Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, my hand held torch does not generate the required heat to raise the temperature of the large sheet of copper. I can only get 4 of the baubles to solder. An upgrade to my kit is duly noted for Father Christmas to ponder over. For now, I change the design!

After a rethink, I drill through the remaining dimples, and using silver headpins I fasten down festive shades of red and green 4 mm crystal beads and secure with jewelers cement on the back! A big cheat – but hey this is now one jazzy tree!

On the star I have stamped a ‘T’ as this is the initial of the recipient. Again, it’s cemented rather than soldered. I hope she likes the idea of being the star on the tree!

Finally – I add six fresh water pearls for a bit of movement. The pearls are ‘wire wrapped’ on to the tree, so they are there to stay and won’t pull off easily!

The 'Bradley Effect' as the light shines through the holes.

Ta-Da! The finished tree safely received!

And here is Ted who I was very excited to receive in the mail - isn’t he soooo cute? Ted is a beautiful handmade old fashioned sort of bear with moveable arms and legs, made by a very talented woman who is going to be opening a store and selling these soon. When she does I’ll post a link.

I'm asked a alot about how to care for jewelry, so here's a quick guide

TOP TIPS ON CARING FOR .925 STERLING SILVER JEWELRY

♥ Wear your jewelry often! Naturally occurring oils in the skin help keep the silver ‘clean’ and shiny.

♥ Starve your silver jewelry of light and oxygen when not in use. Store in a ziploc bag and inside a dark dry place such as the gift box I provide. This slows down oxidization (tarnishing).

♥ Take off jewelry before you shower, swim or sunbathe! Contact with bath/shower products chlorinated water and bright sunshine all cause tarnish.

♥ Remember to remove jewelry before doing household chores. Many household chemicals, if they come in to contact with your jewelry, will cause tarnish.

♥ If you wear perfume, aftershave, body lotions or hairspray - allow them to dry completely before you put on your jewelry. Remember always to put your jewelry on last, and take it off first.

♥ For tarnished jewelry, use a specialist cloth made of high quality cotton impregnated with a silver cleaner and anti tarnish agent. Be sure the jewelry to be cleaned is free from dust and other abrasives before you start. I’ll add these to my ETSY store soon.

♥ Don’t use tissues to try to polish up your jewelry as they will cause scratches. Remember, silver is a relatively soft metal.

♥ If your pieces are heavily tarnished, old, or valuable, do take them to a professional silver cleaner.

Custom Work - Bacon!

The finished suite ready to debut at ‘Ribfest’

I have mentioned in previous posts that usually my jewelry acquires a name as it evolves... well this time there was an aroma too... I was smelling bacon for days...

Prototype sizzling away!
Ironically, this project came in at the same time as a Vegan Anklet Custom piece for another great customer, so I was very careful to keep both projects apart from each other on my bench, it just seemed the right thing to do.

My bacon client, who I’m looking forward to meeting one day, won’t mind me saying that she is one crazy lady when it comes to bacon.

I keep a lot of copper around to play with as it’s great to test things and play with as it’s quick to work with.  Seeing the copper and silver colours together gave me the idea for the bacon colours. I let the colours lead me, and came up with a prototype.

My client was very happy - I think “freakin great’ were her exact words. She decided to have earrings made as well as the necklace... and I have just finished a bacon bracelet too!

What’s next... A meaty .925 Sterling SilverT-Bone Steak  - I kid you not, stay tuned!

Here a few work in progress shots.

Trillium Flower

This is a piece I have been playing with on the bench when I've had a moment - It's inspired by the Trillium Flower, which is the Flower Emblem of Ontario. They grow in abundance in the Spring, on the nearby trails where I live and they are so beautiful. They are protected on property owned by conservation authorities and provincial parks, but who would want to pick them, they look so beautiful in situ? Instead you could have a silver one made on a pendant! This is a One of Kind Piece and when it's gone I shall make a new version. This one is made from different wire thicknesses and sheet silver, and the centre is a melted sphere of recycled silver. You could add different coloured crystal beads or have plain.

Sea Creatures...continued

Starfish

I found some time to continue with the sea creature theme with these two starfish. I didn't want the loop to show so I have soldered it to the back of the design, which means they hang beautifully on the neck.

On the first design I started with thick sheet silver so I could file it down to get a 3D effect. The bumps on the starfish were tricky - I had to melt 15 tiny pieces of wire in to spheres, and then solder these on to the design. It took a few goes as they kept blowing away and moving with the heat of the torch! I gave the starfish a satin finish and the raised spheres are highly polished which make an interesting contrast.

In the second design I drilled 20 holes which graduate in size as they radiate outwards. The whole of the starfish has a satin finish.

They will  be stand alone pendants, however I still have the idea to have a few designs on one chain, but I think I'll have to make everything a little smaller.

As always, look for them on the Etsy Shop soon, and if you can't wait, send me a message through facebook or an email!

Meet Mr. Horse

I love it when I get the chance to work on an idea which has been driving me crackers to get started on.  I had been thinking of aquamarine and turquoise mixed with baroque pearls, and I really wanted to make something to compliment these summery, underwater colours. I’d mixed the colours in a little glass pot on my bench whilst busy with orders, and I knew they were going to look good set against silver. I had been doodling a little star fish, followed by a sea turtle, and then a seahorse, and I had the idea to make something quite teeny tiny combining these underwater creatures. So here’s a sneak preview and a prototype for the trio of sea creatures soon to come. Yes I know it’s weird, but usually what I’m making acquires a name. I don’t think I’d left much creativity aside for the name though hence, the imaginatively titled ‘Mr. Horse’.

When things don’t go quite right, various other names are used, however due to his impeccable behaviour and cooperation, Mr. Horse kept his name and even has his very own listing on Etsy as an independent stand alone pendant.
