Cicada and Monarch Wings

Cicada and Monarch Butterfly Wings

I loved making these designs. At last they are done and are available to buy online in my store. Each one will be made individually, so allow a week for production as it's approaching holiday season (oh yes it is!)

So here are the two designs on the sterling silver sheet. I used 0.8mm thickness, ideal for piercing this level of intricate design whilst being mindful of price and weight. My trusty saw is 25 years old, and wonky as heck, but I'm so used to it, I refuse to buy a new one!

Piercing out the design is therapeutic, I put CBC radio or a podcast on, and just relax in to it!

Peeling off the design is the moment of truth.

The design has been refined using fine needle files built to get in tiny places. The split rings are going to be soldered.
I kind of like the fire stain and the colours the flux trails leave. But as it's not a permanent finish I'm going to pickle in a mild acid to get rid.
The cicada wing has been polished by hand at this point, working from 800 to 4000 paper, and then on to silicon wheels.

Polished with rouge, then tumbling with steel shot gives a high polished classic finish

Colour Chart WIP

This took me ages, as my picture editing skills are somewhat on the slow side!  I like the way it shows many of my designs, but wondering whether it's too cluttered! You know...you can work on something for too long and not see the wood for the trees....

Hello May!

Hello May!

'Emerald' - Birthstone for May
May - Birthstone 'Emerald'

What a beautiful day! I took my camera outside today and took some pictures of my stacking rings. Photography is the part of my business I struggle with the most, but I'm sure having the gorgeous sunshine today , really helped. (And it's a Saturday...)

February - Amethyst Birthstone

The name 'amethyst' comes from the ancient Greek word amethystos that means 'not intoxicated'. In ancient times it was thought that if a person drank alcohol from a cup made from amethyst they would not get drunk. Hmmm...so now we know - Cheers!

(Amethyst - also the birthstone for February)

Sunday 8 February 2015

I love buying jewelry and collecting vintage pieces. Look closely, my bracelet was once a bicycle chain - how cool is that! I met the designer at the QE show last year, and she blew me away with her ethics and designs...and get this - she was still in High School.

I wear this often and it's quite the conversation piece.
...And as I keen cyclist and recycler, it ticks all the boxes.

Saturday 10 January 2015

Made this in December 2014 for a customer I met at 'Art in the Park' earlier in the year. I love it when someone remembers my work and comes back to commission a piece.

The Bass Clef measures 1.75 inches in height, and it was such a satisfying shape to pierce. Took my time to achieve an absolutely perfect shape.

Finished Pendant - Great weight and finish!

The design on paper stayed like this glued to the silver until I was in exactly the right frame of mind to take it on!

All polished and waiting for chain
